It’s nice to be a designer, but just being a designer is not enough. You should learn more things other than designing.
This is why.
Let’s say you’re a freelance designer. That means you need to do everything on your own. Other than design, you have to be equipped with these skills too:
time management, budget/cash management, marketing and sales, negotiation, content creation and copywriting.
Think about this.
- You are a good designer, but you don’t know how to market or close a deal.
- You are a good designer but you can’t negotiate.
- You are a good designer but you can’t schedule your tasks.
It’s definitely going to be a disaster.
As a designer, your main job is to come out with a good design but the other skills are supporting it.
Now, if you are running a new startup or a small design agency, you need to learn even more including team management. It’s correct that you can delegate some of the works to your team, but understanding the basics could help. It’s useful when you want to catch up with the work process and progress.
Being a designer is one thing, but if you want to be successful one, acquiring other supporting skills is not less important.
