Corruption is a critical problem faced by many countries in the world, for thousands of years. It’s a common knowledge that corruption should be stopped. It causes serious damage, more than we can imagine.
Fixing corruption is never easy, well, at least that’s what we hear every now and then. Unless you can follow what China did with its anti-corruption campaign in the last few years, which considered successful, you are pretty much left with unresolved problem.
But moving to another idea, can the advancement of technology prevent and fight corruption?
Imagine if we can build a system that has capability to track and detect financial activity, from the phase of planning to execution, while facilitate the reporting of any suspicious action. It can help to monitor the integrity of public services, can’t it?
It should be an open system that provide transparency as well. The system gives access to the public and let them know where their tax money go. It could allow people to acknowledge and report any attempt and act of corruption, directly through that system.
However, it’s just a blink of an idea, which definitely not new. I’m sure many has had this in mind before. The only thing is most of us can’t build the system. Some of us can, but don’t have the interest, and some others back off or give up since they have to fight with the authority. We know it’s going to be a long battle dealing with corrupted institutions.
So, while technology can solve corruption, but it still needs good will and courage, especially when it’s massive. Whoever can accomplish it, is the real superhero.
